Hunting

Understanding the Meaning and Experience of Hunting at Camp Liberty

The Significance of Hunting

Hunting is more than simply providing food or balancing wildlife populations. While the practical benefits include putting meat on the table and helping to manage animal numbers, hunting is also an activity that does not guarantee a harvest every time. Like fishing, its value often lies in the experience itself.

The true opportunity in hunting is the chance to slow down, immerse oneself outdoors, and listen to the sounds of nature. Observing the environment and watching small creatures move around offers a unique sense of peacefulness. This time spent outside leads to reduced stress and clearer thinking, free from life’s interruptions.  Hunting is meant to be savored and appreciated for its own sake.

Hunting as an Experience at Camp Liberty

At Camp Liberty, hunting is regarded as an experience, not just a pursuit. The camp hosts deer, pheasant, and turkey hunts, welcoming all veterans and first responders to their dedicated hunts throughout the year. These events are supported by guides who share a veteran background and a passion for hunting.

Annual Hunt Events at Camp Liberty

Camp Liberty organizes several hunts throughout the year, offering opportunities for various participants:

  • 2 Pheasant Hunts – one in early spring (March), and one in early winter (December)
  • 1 Turkey Hunt in the spring (April)
  • 3 Deer Hunts:
    • Michigan’s Liberty Disabled Veterans and Youth Deer Hunt (mid-September). This hunt is exclusively for junior hunters aged 16 and under, as well as individuals with qualifying disabilities.

    • Independence Disabled Veteran Hunt for hunters with disabilities (mid-October)
    • Veteran Firearm Deer Season Hunt (November). This event lasts four days and includes up to four veteran hunters, who are selected at random to participate.

How are the hunters selected?

Approximately 50-60 days before a hunt, an email is sent to our distribution list, and information is posted on our Facebook https://www.facebook.com/CampLiberty4Vets and on our website about how to register for an opportunity to participate in a hunt. Approximately 21 days before the hunt, hunters are randomly selected to participate and notified by phone and email to confirm attendance.
