We are pleased to announce the 2024 Deer Hunting program at Camp Liberty. We have made a few changes to the program this year, so please review all the details below. We invite active-duty military and veterans to submit their interest in participating in any of the following opportunities:
- Liberty Hunt – September 13 – 15 – Open to disabled veterans and youth hunters mentored by a family member who is a Veteran or actively serving. – The application deadline is August 23.
- Independence Hunt – October 19 – 22 – Open to disabled veterans. The application deadline is September 15.
- Firearm Deer Season – November 20 to 24 – Open to active duty, Veterans, and youth hunters accompanied by a family member who is a Veteran or is actively serving. The application deadline is September 15.
- Muzzleloading – December 11 to 14- Open to active duty and veterans. (Shotguns, Slug guns, and straight-wall cartridge rifles may also be used.) The application deadline is September 15.
Camp Liberty will provide lodging, food, heated hunting blinds, and a guide to assist you. You may use your own firearm or Camp Liberty can coordinate your use of a firearm. You will need to arrange your own transportation to Camp Liberty and your hunting license. Hunting licenses may be free for Michigan resident veterans with a disability and active-duty military personnel.
A new addition to this year’s program is allowing youths to hunt when accompanied by an Active-Duty Service Member and a Veteran family member. The youth hunters will have the opportunity to take any legal deer and to enjoy the hunting camp experience. Youth hunters must meet the criteria detailed in the Michigan Hunting Regulations and be properly licensed. We believe this will add a new, fun dimension and bring new interest to these hunts.
Another new aspect of this year’s programs is that able-bodied hunters are requested to provide eight hours of volunteer assistance before the hunt for which they are selected. Tasks will be assigned based on each person’s physical abilities and skills. Weekend volunteer days will be coordinated.
We expect that there will be more applicants for deer hunting than Camp Liberty can accommodate. Hunters will be determined through a random drawing administered by Camp Liberty’s Hunting Committee.
